Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural substance produced by the ear to protect the ear canal.
It traps dust, debris, and bacteria and helps keep the ear healthy.
Problems occur when wax builds up faster than it naturally clears.
Common causes include:
Naturally narrow or curved ear canals
Using cotton buds or ear plugs
Hearing aid or earphone use
Overproduction of wax
Age-related changes in wax consistency
Using cotton buds often pushes wax deeper, causing blockages.
You may experience:
Reduced or muffled hearing
Blocked or full sensation
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Dizziness or imbalance
Earache or discomfort
Hearing aid whistling
If left untreated, symptoms can worsen.
We use microsuction as well as irrigation as primary methods, the safest and most effective methods of ear wax removal.
It is recommended by the NHS and UK audiology guidelines.
Most appointments take 20–30 minutes, including:
Medical history
Otoscopy (ear examination)
Wax removal
Post-treatment ear check
We usually recommend olive oil spray or drops:
1–2 sprays
Once or twice daily
For 3–5 days before your appointment
This softens wax and improves removal success.
If you cannot use drops, we can still assess you.
Advice and referral if required
